Size & Thickness Guide
Natural stone tiles are usually available in one or more of the following formats; Fixed Size, Free Length (FL), Opus Pattern and Manoir.
A Free Length format is only available in our natural stones.
Free lengths have a fixed width (of either 400mm, 500mm or 600mm) and varying lengths ranging anywhere from 500mm up to a maximum of 1000mm.
Free Length formats are laid as a random brick bond. For orders over 5m2 you can expect a minimum of 3 different lengths in an order. Please note orders under 5m2 will not always include as many differing lengths.
Our FL cobbles are usually 150mm width, with lengths varying from 180mm up to 350mm.
Our Free Length XL (Super Size) tiles range up to 1400mm in length (only available in a selection of our limestones).
A Free Length format is sold to the nearest m2.
A fixed size format is available in the following sizes:
600 x 400
600 x 600
900 x 600
A fixed size format is sold to the nearest full size tile.
An Opus pattern is available in a select few of our natural stone ranges. An Opus pattern is made up of four tile sizes.
We offer 3 different versions of the Opus pattern – Small, Large and Grand. Total pattern coverage may vary slightly as suppliers can use both metric and imperial measurements. The Opus Pattern is sold to the nearest module.
Small – 600 x 400, 400 x 400, 400 x 200, 200 x 200 (1 pattern = 1.44m2)
Large – 750 x 500, 500 x 500, 500 x 250, 250 x 250 (1 pattern = 2.25m2)
Grand – 900 x 600, 600 x 600, 600 x 300, 300 x 300 (1 pattern = 3.24m2)
A Manoir format is a square tile with either one or four corners cut, a smaller contrasting coloured tile (known as a cabochon) is inset into the cuts.
A popular area to install Manoir is entrance rooms and hallways. For small spaces, we recommend a smaller tile with 4 cut corners and for larger spaces we recommend a larger tile with 1 cut corner.
Natural stone tiles commonly come in one of the following thicknesses; 12mm, 15mm, 20mm and 30mm.
12mm and 15mm are for internal use only.
20mm can be used both internally and externally.
30mm is recommended for external use.
The thickness of the tile is listed on the product page - please note that this is the tile thickness only and you will need to account for the build up of fixing materials underneath the tile.
Some natural stone tiles are uncalibrated. This means the thickness of the tile can vary slightly - tiles need to be graded prior to installation. Always ensure the first tile laid is the thickest tile to set the level of the floor correctly. A thicker adhesive bed will be required for thinner tiles. Please ensure your adhesive is suitable for the bed thickness required.
The product page will mention if the stone is uncalibrated.
Porcelain tiles are available in fixed sizes, these can include;
600 x 300
600 x 600
900 x 600
1200 x 600
We do not recommend mixing different sizes as the tiles will have been produced on different production runs, therefore variation can be expected in both tone and size.
Some products are available in modular packs to create an opus pattern. Porcelain is sold to the nearest full box.
Porcelain tiles are usually thinner than natural stone tiles - making them a great option for projects where head height is a consideration.
Internal porcelains are between 9-10mm in thickness and external porcelains are 20mm.
The thickness of the tile is listed on the product page - please note that this is the tile thickness only and you will need to account for the build up of fixing materials underneath the tile.
For external applications, we recommend a minimum thickness of 20mm (for both Natural Stone & Porcelain).
